MY OCCASIONAL CHAIR

SIT WITH ME

My tag line on this blog invites you to "Sit with me in a search for serenity." Here are some of my favorite "sits."

Outside in the yard in spring and summer:
By the back steps where there is no wind
In the shade of the neighbor's tall pine tree
In the back yard around the fire pit
On the beach

Inside the enclosed back porch in spring and summer
Inside the front porch when its really hot outside
On my couch with the footstool in front of me
Around my table with friends
And.....
In My Occasional Chair -

It was to be a place to sit and soak up the sun indoors on a cold winter afternoon.  An occasional chair. A new-to-me chair, sold by a family after their parents were gone. "It was barely sat in. It's practically new." My new white occasional chair.  According to Wikipedia,

"Occasional furniture refers to small pieces of furniture that can be put to varied uses as the occasion demands."

My white chair is perfect for sitting in the sun in the winter in the house. I don't have to worry about it fading - it's white. Its positioned exactly where the afternoon sun hits in the room, between December 21 and mid-April, at the time in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan when we are desperately seeking some sun.

Initially I had planned for this chair to be used occasionally.  I wanted a small chair that wouldn't be too conspicuous at an angle to the dining table and chairs. And it wasn't really. First, it did seem odd, and then I started sitting in it everyday whether the sun was out or not. Until then the only time I sat in the dining room was around the table. But the new chair wasn't facing the television, and the more I sat there, the more I realized that it really provided far more than a warm sunny place for me. It began to be my reading chair, and then my quiet chair, and soon, my visiting-over-the-internet chair, and my crocheting chair. Even though I can do all those activities other places in the house, none of those places included a warmth from the sun and the Serenity I found in that spot.

I guess that's the gift in finding serenity - you don't realize how much you need it until you find it.

Serenity - in my white chair.  Come now, Sit with me.  Tell me won't you?  Where do you sit to find peace? Where do you find Serenity?

Share your thoughts. Till we meet again, be blessed!

  1. My bench in the garden is a good place to pause and enjoy the flowers I have been nurturing. I don't pause long because invariably I spot some weeds that need my attention. But a rest now and then is sweet.

  3. Hi Sue, what a nice surprise to see your post pop up in my email! Sounds like you are coping well with our sheltering in place! I found being able to enjoy our beautiful summer weather and spending much time outdoors made it very tolerable. Winter time not so sure! But I have favorite places here in my home to sit and be cozy. In the dining area right by the large windows overlooking the bird feeder and next to the gas fireplace In the living room are my favorite. I even bought a small electric fireplace stove and put it in my bedroom by a chair for extra coziness. Yes, we have to look for our happy spots in our home and sunshine is always welcome. So glad you found your new white chair and enjoying it so much! Take care! Praying we all continue to be well. I miss you dear friend!
